Keep Language Skills Growing This Summer: Simple Reading Tips for Parents

Summer is a time for children to relax, play, and enjoy a break from the school routine. However, it can also be a time when important language and literacy skills begin to fade if they aren’t regularly practiced.
The good news is that supporting your child’s language development doesn’t require complicated lesson plans or hours of structured learning. In fact, some of the best opportunities for growth happen during everyday reading experiences.
Why Summer Reading Matters
Reading helps children continue building vocabulary, comprehension, storytelling, and communication skills. These abilities support academic success and confidence when children return to school in the fall.
For preschool and elementary-aged children, reading together also creates valuable opportunities for conversation, which is one of the most effective ways to strengthen language development.
Simple Ways to Build Language While Reading
Ask Questions
As you read, pause occasionally and ask questions about the story.
Examples include:
· What do you think will happen next?
· Why do you think the character did that?
· How would you feel in that situation?
These conversations encourage critical thinking and comprehension.
Introduce New Vocabulary
Books often expose children to words they may not hear in everyday conversation. When you come across an unfamiliar word, take a moment to explain it and use it in another sentence.
Practice Retelling
After finishing a story, ask your child to tell you what happened. Encourage them to describe the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
This helps strengthen sequencing, memory, and expressive language skills.
Follow Your Child’s Interests
Children are more likely to engage with reading when they are interested in the topic. Whether it’s dinosaurs, sports, animals, superheroes, or princesses, choose books that spark their curiosity.
Remember: Reading Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
The goal isn’t to finish a certain number of books or create a perfect reading routine. The goal is simply to keep language-rich conversations happening throughout the summer.
A few minutes of reading each day can help children maintain and strengthen important communication skills while creating meaningful family memories along the way.
At Therapy Redefined, we’re passionate about helping children build the communication skills they need to succeed. If you have questions about your child’s speech, language, or developmental milestones, our team is here to help.
