Believe it or not, getting ready for school is about so much more than knowing letters and numbers!
The weeks leading up to a new school year are the perfect time to practice everyday skills that help children feel more confident and independent in the classroom.
Here are a few simple things to work on at home:

🗣️ Communication Skills
Practice asking for help when something is difficult.
Encourage your child to answer simple questions about their day.
Work on introducing themselves and saying their teacher's or friends' names.
Practice following 2-3 step directions like, "Put on your shoes, grab your backpack, and meet me at the door."
✋ Fine Motor Skills
Practice using scissors safely.
Draw, color, and trace shapes.
Write or recognize their name.
Open snack bags, lunch containers, and water bottles independently.
Button, zip, and fasten clothing.
🍎 Daily Living Skills
Wash hands without reminders.
Put on shoes and a jacket independently.
Pack and unpack a backpack.
Clean up toys or activities before moving to something new.
😊 Social & Emotional Skills
Take turns during games.
Practice waiting patiently.
Talk about feelings and ways to calm down when frustrated.
Practice greeting new friends and adults with confidence.
The best part? These skills can all be practiced through everyday moments—helping make lunch, playing outside, reading together, or getting ready for the day.
Every child develops at their own pace, and small steps add up to big confidence.
If you're wondering whether your child is ready for the classroom or have concerns about their communication, fine motor, or sensory skills, our team at Therapy Redefined is here to help.
