Gross Motor vs. Fine Motor Skills: What’s the Difference?

ree

At Therapy Redefined, we often talk about motor skills, but what exactly does that mean? Simply put, motor skills are how we move and control our bodies. They fall into two main categories: gross motor and fine motor.

Gross motor skills involve the big muscles that help us move our bodies -  running, jumping, climbing, throwing, or even sitting upright. These movements build strength, balance, and coordination.

Fine motor skills, on the other hand, use the small muscles in the hands and fingers for precise tasks like writing, buttoning a shirt, using scissors, or picking up small objects.

Both sets of skills work together to help children explore, learn, and become more independent.

At Therapy Redefined, we design play-based activities that support both — from obstacle courses that build gross motor strength to crafts and games that fine-tune hand control.

Because when movement feels fun, progress happens naturally.

If you're child needs a boost in their motor skills, please get in touch with our office to see how we can help your child grow and succeed.
